Virginia is one of the oldest states in the country and was also a significant part of colonial America. It has had an interesting and prominent role in the country’s development and also in its creation. It is logical that one of its nicknames is the Old Dominion. It is also known as being the mother of presidents because eight of the men who have served as Presidents of the United States were born in Virginia. This is a higher number than any other state in the Union, though perhaps it has an unfair advantage being one of the oldest. George Washington was the nation’s first president and also, and sensibly, the first of the presidents to have been born in Virginia. He rose in political ranks during the Revolutionary War in which he served as the commander of the Continental Army. He also played a significant role in the development of the country and is often referred to as the father of the nation. He also presided over the Philadelphia Convention and the drafting of the original Constitution of the United States. He has been honored by many memorials and monuments across the country with one of the largest and most well known being Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

Another great personality that is represented in the Mount Rushmore sculpture is Thomas Jefferson who also happens to be one of the presidents that was born in Virginia. He was the third president of the United States and is well known for being the author of the Declaration of Independence. He is also credited with being a significant part of the development of the country is considered to be one of the founding fathers. Two of the major political events that occurred during his presidency include the Louisiana Purchase and the Louis and Clark expedition. He was philosophical in his approach to politics and was one of the Enlightenment thinkers.
